Abstract: The catalytic activity of a new ruthenium dimer, in which a RuCl(C=CHPh)(PCy3) fragment is connected via three μ-chloro bridges to a ruthenium-(p-cymene) moiety, has been investigated in the ATRP of methyl methacrylate and styrene. This complex is a decent catalyst for the ATRP of methyl methacrylate. The polymerisations proceeded indeed in a controlled fashion and the polydispersities were quite narrow. The polymerisations of styrene were also apparently controlled, but ceased after 80% conversion. With both monomers and CCl4 as initiator, the molecular weight of the polymers was lower than the calculated value.
